Many skincare brands create their point of difference by being 'free-from' particular ingredients. They claim these ingredients have a negative impact on the skin and should therefore be feared. Although the claims are mostly unsubstantiated, this approach does provide a uniqueness.

Some brands do the opposite, where instead of being 'free-from' something, they identify by one particular ingredient, for example, a peptide or vitamin C or glycolic acid. When there's just one main hero ingredient in the range, it is very one dimensional. Good for marketing but not for results. Also applying a hero ingredient like glycolic acid continually can often lead to irritations.
